How to Prevent Matting in Your Dog’s Coat

Matting Is More Than a Cosmetic Problem

It’s easy to think of knots as simply an untidy coat, but severe matting can become painful.

As mats tighten, they pull on the skin whenever your dog moves. They can trap moisture, hide parasites and prevent air reaching the skin.

In some cases, matting can even make it difficult for dogs to walk comfortably.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Treatment

Keeping your dog’s coat healthy doesn’t need to be difficult.

The best routine combines regular brushing at home with professional grooming every four to six weeks.

Keeping to a schedule prevents small tangles becoming large mats that require shaving away.

Different coats need different care.

Cockapoos, Cavapoos and other Poodle crosses require a completely different brushing technique to a Terrier or Shih Tzu.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is owners using the wrong brush.

We’ll happily recommend the right grooming tools and demonstrate how to use them properly.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Many owners contact us when they notice one or two knots.

Unfortunately, what you can feel on the surface is often only a small part of what’s happening underneath.

Regular grooming appointments are the easiest way to stay ahead of matting and keep your dog comfortable.
