When Should You Book Your Puppy’s First Groom?

Bringing home a puppy is exciting. You buy the bed, the toys, the lead, the food and probably far too many treats.

What many owners don’t think about until much later is grooming.

We often receive enquiries from owners saying:

“My puppy is six months old and has never been groomed. Can I book them in for a full haircut?”

While we absolutely can help, that first appointment is often much more challenging than it needed to be.

Puppies experience lots of new things during their first few months of life.

This is the ideal time to introduce them to:

• Being handled.
• Standing on a grooming table.
• Bathing.
• Drying.
• Brushing.
• Nail trimming.
• Clippers.
• Scissors.

Waiting until their coat is overgrown often means they’re experiencing all of these things for the very first time in one long appointment.

That’s a lot for any puppy to process.

That’s exactly why we created Puppy Grooming School.

Instead of rushing straight into a full groom, we gradually introduce each stage over four carefully planned visits.

Your puppy learns that the salon is a safe place, grooming equipment isn’t frightening and being handled is actually quite enjoyable.

Each session builds on the confidence developed during the previous visit.

By the end of the programme, most puppies happily walk into the salon with wagging tails.
